Why the Project Is Called Abbreviatory

The name says what it does. Abbreviatory is an old adjective meaning “serving to shorten”, from abbreviate plus -ory, the ending that turns a verb into “the thing that does it”, as in directory or laboratory.

That’s the job. Something long goes in, something short comes out, and the short version still means the same thing. Think of “Dr.” for “doctor”: shorter, and anyone can read it back in full. The tool works the same way. Every line it leaves out can be expanded back to the original.

abbreviatory, adjective: serving to shorten. Abbreviate, to make shorter, plus -ory, that which does it. A bar of 5,630,070 bytes shortens to 3 kB. Less output. Same essential information.

Why Not a Word About Logs or Tokens

The project could have been named after logs, or tests, or tokens. Each would have been too small. It reads test runs, logs and JSON today, and Git diffs and HTTP responses next. And tokens are only one reason to want shorter output. A person reading a CI summary has the same problem as an agent with a context window.

Abbreviatory names the act, not the input. Whatever it reads, it shortens.

How to Write It

Abbreviatory, with a capital A, for the project. abbreviatory, all lower case, for the command. Say it the way it’s spelled: ab-BREE-vee-uh-tor-ee.
